Matts Pålsson, the second husband of Brita Mårtensdotter, got into trouble according to Tyko Lundkvist.

Matts Pålsson, who was the son of Pål Pålsson, married Matts Mattssons widow Brita. She was the daughter of Mårten Nilsson in Nyåker. As stepchildren she carried with her Per Mattsson (ID 346) and Lars Mattsson. In the new marriage she delivered in 1680 the daughter Anna Mattsdotter.

Then the misfortune happened on the 21st of March 1686. The villagers had gathered in the house of Pål Pålsson after they had been on prayer meeting in the house of Olof Mattsson. They talked this fateful day about using burn-beaten land and about things, which had to be planned before the spring. Then they bought from the hostess snaps for 9 öre. They drank the snaps and began after that to quarrel about a boat, which the neighbour Hindrik Mårtensson had borrowed without permission and rowed over the small river. Hindrik said very exacting to Lars, the stepchild to Matts, that he should flog Lars if he did not keep guard of the cattle so that they could not come to Hindriks hay-fields. The quarrel continued and Hindrik tried to beat Matts over the table with the clenched fist against his head and shoulder. Then both stepped out on the floor. Hindrik cried, "You dog come here!" Matts walked against him and intended to mark him a little. But Hindrik grabbed Matts´ hair. Then Matts took out his sheath knife and cut Hindrik more then he intended with several wounds in his breast, cheeks and in one shoulder. Hindrik fell down and lied in bed 8 days, until he passed away on the 28th of March.

Matts visited Hindrik on his deathbed. He tried to get reconciliation. At the district-court sessions he asked to be pardoned as he wanted to enjoy the life for the sake of his wife and the children. Matts wanted to reconcile with the widow of Hindrik. Hindrik and Matts were nephews. Hindriks mother Beata was sister to Mats father Pål.

Olof Mattsson, who also was a cousin, witnessed that all villagers had met in his house for morning service as it was not possible to go to the church. The distance to the church was 7 mil (about 42 miles) and the road to the church was in bad condition and ran over the mountain. It was said that Matts also was under suspicion of having injured the cattle of Hindrik. Finally it was said that Hindrik tended to fight and that he was short-tempered and stuck-up.

The district court sentenced Matts for manslaughter to death. The court of appeal then got the case. But we do not know the decision this arrived at. Matts, however, disappeared from Agnäs. Probably he was executed or he was reprieved and had to be in prison for life and build fortresses. As his wife remarried later we know that Matts Pålsson now was dead (Judgement book 1686 2/6 fol. 545).

The second son of Brita Mårtensdotter and Matts Mattson i.e. Lars Mattsson (brother to Per Mattsson; ID 346) also got into trouble according to Tyko Lundkvist.

The vicar Petrus Arctædius was still hale and hearty. He often reported different faults for judicial proceedings. It was not only vagrancy he could not bear. He also reported improper life and drunkenness, at least when this happened on Sundays. In 1694 he complained about boozing outside the church during holidays. He reported the farm hand Lars Mattson, the son of the deceased Matts Mattsson. Hindrik Mårtensson (see above) accused the fatherless Lars of inadequate watch of the cattle. Now Lars worked in Orrböle. The first Sunday after Christmas he came drunken to the church and he vomited in the pew. He admitted that he had drunk little snaps on a feast in Levar. One witness said that it was only water Lars had thrown up. But Elias Isaksson from Järnås said that it smelled "strong snaps". Lars was condemned to 14 days imprisonment and also to "church fine" as he had no money to pay for the crime (Judgement book 1694 26/2 § 3). Church fine could mean that he had to sit and be ashamed at a stool near the entrance door of the church when the villagers arrived to the church. Lars Mattson was farmer in Hummelholm 1695-97. He got boatswain and we do not know what then happened.

Brita Mårtensdotter was married fore times according to Leif Boström.

694 Per Olofsson, X:183.  Born in 1640. Per died in Håknäs, Nordmaling. Occupation: Farmer. Residence: Håknäs, Nordmaling.

Per Olofsson quarrelled with a parish constable according to TLÖ pages 86-87.

Olof Jakobsson had been outside the church on the Sunday before Quinquagesima Sunday in 1683. He was then accused by Per Olofsson in Håknäs and Jacob Isaksson in Mo of having not accounted for money he had collected by order of the parish. They also pushed Olof. Jacob said at the district-court sessions that they only wanted to know how much money Olof had received as compensation for the lifts he had given and from the guests in his inn. "God knows what has happened with the money you have received. It would not be an unreasonable demand to get a statement of accounts so that the money could be used by the parish". All the country people agreed with this demand. The Court decided that Olof Jakobsson, and also other who had collected money by order of the parish, should render an account first in the parish hall and then at the district-court sessions.

Pål Pålsson was in the year 1683 accused by his brother Matts. They had in 1681 lived on the same farm. But Pål had now taken a floor from Matts´ new farm and used it in his own building. He had also gathered in a hop-garden, that Matts had received from their father. Pål had furthermore usurped the best part of burn woodland that they had produced together. Finally Pål had built a bridge over a brook, which was situated between the village and the burn woodland. The cattle then could walk over the bridge and damage the corn.

Pål answered that he had only taken his share. But he admitted that he had taken the best share of the burn woodland and that the bridge was built by his farm hand Anders Pålsson. Pål was fined to compensate and help his brother. The brothers were furthermore exhorted to live in agreement with each other.

The Finns Pål Pålsson and Johan Mattsson are mentioned in the year 1688 when they without permission cut a burn-beaten land 1 1/2 mil (1 mil = about six miles) away on the common land at Agnsjöliden. They intended to harvest half a tunna (1 tunna = 147 litres) of rye.

One example showing how the Finns kept together over large areas is the history of the thief Gubb-Johan (Gubbe = old man). Gubb-Johan travelled about in Ångemanland with a tramp woman. After having visited many villages he came to Pål Pålsson in Agnäs. They were allowed to stay at Pål despite that all the farmers in Movattnet and Gideå "have visited Pål and informed him about the theft that Johan had been guilty of" (Judgement book 1668 13/8 § 4). Now the Court ordered Pål to get the thief before the next district-court sessions. If he did not conform to this he himself should come and compensate 40 mark for the theft. We do not know what happened with Pål and Gubb-Johan.

A maid Brita Jonsdotter complained in 1688 about that she had to fly from her place. The wife of Pål had treated Brita very badly with evil curses and accusations because she had happened to become pregnant after having had a sexual intercourse with Matts Mattson, who was already married (se ID 700). Brita had to starve so she must go begging for food from the neighbouring families. The maid, who is said to come from Torrböle, actually obtained redress at the district-court sessions (Judgement book 1688 27/2 § 7).

Pål married Anna Olofsdotter, X:188.

They had the following children:
349 i. Karin, IX:94 (1680-1754)
ii. Märta (1683-1753)
iii. Rakel (1690-)
iv. Sigrid (1695-1764)

In the Judgement book of 1687 (24/10 § 12) is noticed that Matts Mattsson is a "violent man". When he was very young he got married with a considerably older woman. Already in 1687 she was aged. This was not a god start. In the summer 1687 Matts works as boatswain at the wife Sissla in Agnäs. He then went to bed with the maid Brita Jonsdotter (see under ID 698). At his home in Mjösjö he did the same with the maid Karin Persdotter from Hummelholm.

His wife Karin, who had left her husband, complained to the district court sessions and said: " Once near the river he beat me with a switch very badly. He took me in the feet and held them high with the head down. He whipped me on the body as long as he was able to." Matts was 1688 fined 24 mark silver coins because he "had done her left hand and arm paralysed and injured". That's how he was, the son of the Mjösjöman. He was also condemned to have had sex with two maids and had for that to run the gauntlet. Totally he was fined 276 silver dalers and 50 copper dalers. As he could not pay with money he had to pay the fine with his body.

The ten pages in the Judgement book in which are described the treatment of Matts´ wife and the maids give descriptions of great value about the life in the Finnish cottages. Here is mentioned loft and drying room where they had bed and could sleep when there was too little space in the cottage or "when it started to drip in the cottage". When it got to hot in the drying room they went out and cooled off in the rain or went to sleep in a hay-barn. The old people lived in a shed by themselves.

Once the wife helped Matts to keep the pole when he should repairer a sleigh. He then put her arm out of joint so it was never healed again. "In addition to this he once beat my head so that it bled two days and I was near to die". The wife Karin had since 2 1/2 years left him and she wanted not to return" as he has so awfully treated me. I am afraid that he will kill me".

Mats Matsson, his brother Isac and 10 other Finns carried on an illegal elk-hunting, which was reported at the district court sessions 1707 in Nordmaling. They had driven some elks from the mountain to the forest at Humleholm, where they shot them. Elk-hunting was forbidden at this place. The hunting was punishable according to a law of the year 1681. They were fined 50 daler for each elk; totally 200 daler. This was a severe punishment.

During the hard years of war in the later years of the reign of king Charles XII they met with failure of the crops. Many Finnish cottages were then laid waste. This also happened in the year 1718 with the farm owned by Mats Matsson. It is written that Mats was hit by great poverty and that he had to go begging. Mats died in the year 1720.

Mats married Karin Hansdotter, X:190.

At the district court sessions on the 26th of March in 1672 Per Zackrisson announced for the first time the sales of the farm in Tynnerås, which was the only farm in Tynnerås at that time. Per came from Össby and the parish of Gudmundrå. On the 21st of January in 1675 he got the certificate of registration of title to 9 1/2 seland (1 seland = about 3500 square metres) and ground in Tynnerås. He had bought it on the 3rd of January 1672 from Johan Eriksson in Tynnerås, who moved to Bölen in the parish of Fjällsjö. Per Zackrisson was still alive on the 22nd of January in 1694 in Tynnerås.
